Casey Affleck was better in Jesse James than in Gone Baby Gone, but both helped keep him on the awards radar all fall. Brother Ben must be busting his buttons with pride right about now.
Javier Bardem feels like the favorite. Chilling performance, out of character for him.
Hal Holbrook is the sentimental favorite. One of our more durable, adorable character players (used to be a lot scarier). Into the Wild deserves SOMETHING.
Hoffman is terrific in Charlie Wilson’s War, but he has an Oscar.
But Tom Wilkinson gives a “I’d like to thank the Academy” performance in Michael Clayton (afflicted, like Julie Christie’s Away From Her turn). Give it to Wilkinson or Holbrook, I say.
