RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - A Chesterfield County man who ran a Civil War relics business was killed when some munitions exploded outside a detached garage at his home.
Chesterfield County Police said neighbors reported the explosion Monday afternoon after hearing the blast and then finding their neighbor fatally injured in his backyard.
Police were withholding the victim’s name until he can be positively identified.
Neighbors told the Richmond Times-Dispatch that the victim’s name was Sam White and he ran a Web site called Sam White Relics.
The site contains photos of various relics for sale, such as Civil War artillery shells, cannonballs, bullets and other artifacts.
Police found other unexploded military ordnance at the house, and evacuated about two dozen homes until authorities could determine the area was safe. Police spokeswoman Ann Reid said Tuesday morning that the evacuation remained in effect indefinitely.
