The Star Report: Britney Spears appears on ‘How I Met Your Mother’, acts normal

In terms of a comeback, Britney Spears’ appearance on the sitcom “How I Met Your Mother” Monday night surely was more successful than her comically frightful performance on the MTV Music Awards last fall.

Then again, this wasn’t live, and they weren’t asking her to dance.

So for a brief moment, all the head-shaving, crotch-flashing, Starbucks-chugging nuttiness was in the background while Spears brought to life her character, a sweet-natured receptionist named Abby.

According to the Associated Press writer assigned to cover the breaking story, she acquitted herself well, appearing “fresh-faced and relaxed, capably filling the small role.”

The plot: Abby has a crush on unlucky-in-love Ted (Josh Radnor), but Ted only has eyes for Abby’s boss Stella (Sarah Chalke), a dermatologist. Ted’s goal: to win a date by his 10th session with Stella. Nothing’s working.

Finally, he figures: “The receptionist - that’s my way in.”

So he brings Abby coffee in a bid to impress Stella, but it charms Abby even more. During one visit, Abby trails him and Stella into an office to deliver a book - a self-help tome called “The Power of Me” - that he left behind in the waiting room.

We won’t spoil the ending, but we’re pretty sure it doesn’t involve a quickie Las Vegas wedding and divorce 12 hours later. Although that would make a good future sitcom plot.

Rowling says she had suicidal thoughts Before she wrote those little stories about a boy wizard and became one of the richest women in England, J.K. Rowling says she suffered from depression and even contemplated suicide. The author of the Harry Potter series said she had suicidal thoughts in her mid-20s. But it wasn’t fame and bags of money that overcame the illness (although we suspect it could play a role in keeping it away). She found relief the old fashioned way: psychotherapy. “I have never been remotely ashamed of having been depressed. Never,” she told an interviewer. “I went through a really rough time and I am quite proud that I got out of that.”

Fred Thompson looking for fake presidential work After momentarily mistaking his TV and movie persona - presidential! - for real life and actually running for president, Fred Thompson is back where he belongs, pretending to be presidential and district attorneyish. The William Morris Agency announced this week that it has signed the actor/politician, signaling a return to the screen for the former senator from Tennessee. Thompson dropped out of the race for the Republican presidential nomination on Jan. 22.

Gore Vidal just can’t seem to keep it shutThe late William F. Buckley Jr. was a polarizing figure in life, and in death, too, it turns out. Gore Vidal, who never tried to hide is dislike of the conservative icon, hasn’t softened his opinion since Buckley’s recent death. Gore writes on TruthDig.com that the National Review founder was “a hysterical queen” and “a world-class American liar. . . . Buckley was often drunk and out of control.” No, Gore, tell us how you really feel! He blames the “tired hacks” at Newsweek for letting Buckley’s “creepy,” “brain-dead” son, Christopher, talk them into a reverential cover story on his father. Vidal concludes, “RIP WFB - in hell.”

Hey Wham! fans, yes, both of you …Ladies and gentlemen, George Michael is giving North America one more try.
